The following quote from Austin Kleon has become a real point of inspiration for me. It’s not longer enough to create content, we need to document our journey to entertain and guide people along the way.
When a painter talks about her “work,” she could be talking about two different things: There’s the artwork, the finished piece framed and hung on a gallery wall, and there’s the art work, all the day-to-day stuff that goes on behind the scenes in her studio: looking for inspiration, getting an idea, applying oil to canvas, etc. There’s “painting” the noun, and there’s “painting” the verb. As in all kinds of work, there is a distinction between the painter’s process, and the products of the process.
Austin Kleon – Show your work!
Therefore, I’m proud to introduce you to my 3Es; Creativity, Productivity & Technology.
Creativity
It used to be really difficult to be creative, or at least it was difficult to get your creations in front of people. The internet has completely revolutionised that, and now it is so easy to get your work in front of people.
It may be as simple as an Instagram post, or funny video on TikTok, or it could be a much larger piece of work like a book, or a feature length film. Even 15 years ago, the process of creating something was shrouded in mystery. Books just appeared in the shop, paintings on walls. But now, we see constant updates all the time. As such, the process has become as much of the creation as the final product.
I’ll be using this concept to document my process of creation through my ‘Detail Dive‘ posts that will give you an insight into the work I’m completing and the systems that keep me working.
Productivity
I have always thought of myself as a productive person, but up until the last year I was wrong; I was simply busy, not productive. For me, I need to employ a number of systems and tools to ensure that I can keep on top of my useful output, especially as I am now committed to giving you a (near) daily insight into my creativity world.
I’ll introduce you to my systems and tools, and show you how I make them work for me. Hopefully this will enable you to craft your own systems that can improve your productivity.
Technology
I have always loved technology of all forms. Whether it was the N64 console when I was young (King of the Consoles in my opinion) or getting a new iPod, you couldn’t beat the feeling of the latest technology.
But now, it is so much more.
Technology is my gateway to and for creativity. It allows me to get my work in front of people, and helps me document the process. I can then share the lessons I have learnt and continue to learn to try to enable you to start your own journey. It’s also my greatest resource in terms of consuming and learning information.
The latest technology supports my productivity through the utilisation fo apps and other tools to ensure my day stays on track at all times.
Hopefully you can see that my 3Es are not independent, rather they support and enhance each other; enabling me to improve on a daily basis. Looking at James Clear’s Atomic habits, we now that a 1% improvement every day compounds to make a 37x positive change over a year. Let that sink….We can be 37 times better in a year if we improve 1% each day. Unreal!
As part of my dedication to supporting your journey, I’ll be publishing my ‘Detail Dive’ regularly, so make sure you follow on social media or at least keep checking back on the website to see where I am up to.
As usual Say Hi if you have any questions or comments, and I’d love to chat any ideas through with you!
