Time for a new mic upgrade

I’m a firm believer that the sound element of a video is just as (if not more?) important that the actual film.

Therefore, for the past couple of months, I have been using one of the Lekato Lavalier Microphones, and I can’t fault them at all. They’re easy use, comes in a pair so I can use for two people if I need, and also just works really well. I’ve genuinely had no reason to change or upgrade them.

Until now.

As you know, I’ve recently taken delivery of a new camera, the Canon M50, and so fare I adore. But with my planned foray into vlogging, I decided it was time to upgrade the mic too. So, I decided to hit up YouTube to figure out the best one for me to get, without breaking the bank.

Rode Videomicro

Now this option is very common with YouTubers and bloggers alike, and seems to be the benchmark for a lot of people. And I can see why, it is a good solid make, and has great reviews so this was definitely one I considered.

Deity D4 Duo

The Deity is also a common option for lots of people, but the big thing that sets is apart is that it has two microphones, one pointing towards you, the other pointing away from you. This means that you can record sounds form both directions.

Not at first I wasn’t sure about this, but it seems this functionality is really popular. But, I also saw a few videos saying that the sound quality wasn’t necessarily the best, no matter the dual aspect recording.

Boya BY-MM1

So, I found myself checking out the Boya next, and it had some pretty good reviews. There were even a couple of videos comparing to the Rode, and it compared pretty well. But I must be honest, final selling point was the price. This was half the price of the Rode, and a third of the price of the Deity.

Now, I’m not saying that this will be the last microphone I’ll ever get, in fact I’m sure it won’t. But, it’s a great for me to up my vlogging game now, and will definitely come in really handy for my videos in general.

I’ve not used it yet extensively, but so far it looks pretty good and I’m really happy with my choice. I’ll definitely be testing it out more and more, and may even create a video reviewing against the law mic and the internal camera mic too.
