Is your message getting lost in translation?

I was planning some content last night for my YouTube channel, and it felt like I made a bit of breakthrough.

So, I excitedly started explaining my progress to my wife, and she looked at me like we weren’t speaking the same language. And that’s when it really hit home.

You can have the best ideas in the world, but if you can communicate them, they are worthless…

Now, don’t get me wrong, I always knew this was the case but last night was the first time that it really hit home for me. So, what steps am I going to take to get around this…

Tell a story

Gudies are great, but people tune into videos or read articles for a story.

So I’m going to make mine more personal. Give my experiences; what I learnt and what you can learn from them. I’m no expert, but surely it’s better if we can all learn from one person’s mistake right??

Simplify

It’s all too easy to use big long words or topic specific phrases (I nearly wrote terminology – lol!), but instead, let’s make this as easy to understand and share as possible. Sharing knowledge is crucial in every sense, so let’s make it accesible for everyone!

The same can be said for the style in communicating. Let’s keep it simple, and easily understood. I saw this tweet earlier, and it summed up how I feel perfectly….

Explain to understand

I watched a great video by Thomas Frank the other day about the Feynman Technique (below), and it now makes a lot more sense.

Essentially, the best way to learn is to simplify it so you can explain it to someone else. So, every time I now look at a new topic, I need to ensure that not only do I understand it, but that actually I can explain it in a simple way.

This will help with both my own knowledge, but also so I can delivery this to everyone else.

Now, I’m pretty happy with this lesson, and will definitely be spending more time on my storytelling skills. Trying my best to make things as easy to understand as possible.

I’m already half way through ‘Storyworthy‘ by Matthew Dicks, and can’t wait to learn more from one of the best story tellers around.
