Time to upgrade the hardware?

The last few months have been a real learning curve, on so many levels.

But one of the toughest lessons has been the practicalities of shooting and editing videos. That said, it is something that I have genuinely enjoyed, and ‘think’ I’m starting to get a bit better at. But for a while now I have struggled with the actual filming.

I’ve mentioned before that I have been using my old Canon EOS 100D to record my videos, and originally started off with the 18-55mm kit lens. There was nothing wrong with this, but I quickly changed over to my 50mm f1.8. This gave me great blurry backgrounds (or bokeh if you will!), and really helped with the light levels for my filming.

But, for some reason, the autofocus would jump around like a mad man. I thought it may have something to do with the lens, or the fact I had to set my camera up farther away because of the focus length. But after a quick change of the lens, it was no better.

So I went about trawling through tons of videos to make sure I had the autofocus settings right. Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work, and I found myself getting more and more frustrated. On some occasions it would take me 4 or 5 attempts just to get one line recorded. I’d sit there not moving in fear that the autofocus was going to go haywire again.

So, last week I made the dramatic decision to upgrade my camera.

I’ll be honest, it was something that I toed and froed with loads. Did I need it, should i just revert to using my phone, and could I really justify this investment??

But after watching lots of videos and reading lots of articles, I have decided to take the plunge with a Canon M50.

It’s not here yet, but now the decision has been made, and the order placed, I am beyond excited. I’m hopefully going to get better video quality, better autofocus and will be able to set my shots up better as it has a flip out screen.

All of these benefits have given me a bit of a kick to think outside of the box, and who knows I may even try some vlogging too.
