Tech Setup

As I started learning more about creativity, productivity, technology, it became apparent the YouTube was going to be a platform that I wanted to utilise. The problem was that I had never recorded myself on camera, and wasn’t really sure I had all that physical and metaphorical tools that I needed.

And the next stage of my learning commenced, and the most obvious place to start was obviously YouTube (duh!). So, i headed straight to my usual favourites to check out any information that they may have about their equipment and how they were using it.

Ali Abdaal has a page on his site dedicated to the tech he uses and he had some great information n one of his newsletters. Thomas Frank has some information on his YouTube, but it quickly became apparent that their respective setups were way out of my realms of possibility.

It was at this point that I came across Think Media and their videos on how I could start posting content from my phone. While I have no issues with this at all, I decided to dig out my old Canon EOS 100D that I probably hadn’t used for at least 2 years and started trawling YouTube for some videos on how to get the most out of this setup. The one item I did buy early on was a set of two lavalier lapel microphones (see below) so that Josh and I could each have one when recording Gaming Guys videos.

At this point, I also dedicated some time and effort to think about where and how I was going to record my videos. As I’m currently working in our dining room, I was lucky that the room has a fair bit of natural light so carried on using this space. This meant I didn’t need to think about large and expensive lights.

Now I had my setup, and knew roughly how I was going to set it up, I had to start thinking about how I was going to edit, and then eventually upload some videos.

If you’re thinking about creating content, have you given some thought to your setup? It’s all too easy to think that you need the latest and best camera or computer. But actually, so much can be done on phones now, do you really need it at this time?

I’ve tried to look at this quite simplistically, and been pretty careful (verging on the tight) with my money while this is all still getting started. I would much rather spend money on learning resources every month rather than buying the latest camera.

Why not drop a comment or message and let us know what you’re using to make your content?
